A drink with a view – under J&C’s SkyLouvres
13 September 2021
When Mr. Brightside opened in Christchurch, it was the first day of summer. The perfect time to open a rooftop bar – the sun is shining, a warm breeze is in the air.
You might say it’s not surprising they were busy. But what is surprising is that during winter (which in Christchurch can be quite chilly, to say the least!) people kept coming...and kept sitting in the prime seats outside.
“We were just as busy in winter as we were in summer, which we weren’t expecting. But it’s testament to the technology we’ve installed to ensure our outdoor spaces are cosy and warm,” says Jeremy Stevens, part-owner of Mr. Brightside.
Mr. Brightside features two SkyLouvre Concertinas by Johnson & Couzins. The fully retractable roof system provides complete flexibility over the bar’s outdoor space.
“While creating Mr. Brightside we researched rooftop bars around the world and found most don’t have cover overhead. But here in Christchurch we have definite seasons, so we knew we needed to make our spaces useable year-round.”
As well as the J&C SkyLouvres, Mr. Brightside has a state-of-the-art heating system hidden in its outdoor spaces.
“We tend to have the roof open most of the time, so people can look up to the stars, however when it’s raining we close the louvre roof which enables us to keep the area weathertight. And thanks to the heaters we’ve installed it’s warm no matter what the weather is doing!”
Jeremy says they had no doubt about using J&C’s technologies to help them achieve the vision they had for Christchurch’s first rooftop bar.
“We’ve used Johnson & Couzins on other projects so when we started the Mr. Brightside project they were immediately our preferred supplier. They have great products which are all designed and made here locally, which we like as well.”
Mr. Brightside is open again in COVID Alert Level Two, so if you’re in Christchurch pop up and enjoy a drink with the best view in town.
